This seems to me to obviously be a story used to explain people dying from water born diseases after drinking bad well water (like cholera). This also explains why the church can't get rid of wellmen, and why throwing gold into the well gets rid of it (gold has antibacterial properties)
Nordic folklore : *Creates a scare creature and leaves some interpretation to them.*
Humon comics: *Draws one with great hair, sexy body and a massive penis.*
I love this comic.

That is not my idea of great hair or a sexy body, but whatever floats your boat I suppose.
Anyway, I'm pretty sure that's probably closer to what people imagined at the time. If you look at art of "scary" creatures from the time you'll see people weren't particularly inventive, so they probably just thought it was a relatively normal looking naked man with black skin and red glowing eyes.
*Mysterious meteorite crashes on the blasted heath outside my house*
*Weird colour inside tries to live in my well*
"oh, didn't realise there was already someone was living here." *Weird glow shuffles out awkwardly and lives in the attic instead*
O
