The Celtic styles went out of fashion because they were seen as heretical.

Well, more a "I'm the king of Northumbria, we've been having the Celtic style tonsure, but today (at the Synod of Whitby) we'll change to Rome style. Deal with it."

I think I saw some guy with the second Celtic style in Portland. Though, judging by what he had on from the neck down leads me to believe he was not a monk..
