I not hard of hearing, I have tinnitus. Amplification doesn't help and I can actually pass hearing tests. I do have constant background noise that sounds a lot like a very high pitched electronic whine. My coping method is to really focus on the person I am talking to. This results in comment from me like, "Please look at me, I can't hear you." :-)
